Given or Earned: Growing up many of us were taught to respect our elders – parents, teachers, etc. What do you think about whether respect is due certain people? Do elders and leaders have to earn your respect? With all the stories of people in positions of power misusing it, what standards should we set about how respect is given and received? Have you shown respect for someone or something without question and then found out it/they were not worthy of such respect?
Self-respect: One of the most important lessons we can learn is how to respect ourselves – our bodies, our emotions. How do you show self-respect – by standing up for what you believe in and holding your ground? By taking great care of your body, resting, eating well, and exercising? By being kind to yourself, less self-critical and gentler with your difficult emotions?
Love, Honor…: Traditional marriage vows usually include some form of the phrase ‘love, honor and _____’. Used to be ‘obey,’ and then I guess someone realized it wasn’t happening anyway. Sometimes you hear ‘cherish’, and sometimes, ‘respect’. If you’re married, what words did you use, and what words actually make sense to you as a guide to a healthy partnership? If you’re not married, do you envision a partnership that encompasses these words? What order would you place them in based on their importance to you?
Dis: What are the things that others in your life could do to DISrespect you – what are the behaviors you hold as signs of respect and which are signs of disregard? Are there definite deal-breakers for you in terms of how your friends or family behave toward you? Have you ever broken your own rules and allowed someone to mistreat you?
Paying Tribute: As we get older, we are more and more often placed in the position of needing to say goodbye to those we love. How do you pay tribute to those who have gone before? Do you have non-traditional ways of remembering and honoring your loved ones? Which methods of remembering and paying tribute speak to your heart and help you to heal from losses?

When people do not respect us we are sharply offended; yet in his private heart no man much respects himself.
I have no right, by anything I do or say, to demean a human being in his own eyes. What matters is not what I think of him; it is what he thinks of himself. To undermine a man's self-respect is a sin.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery
If once you forfeit the confidence of your fellow-citizens, you can never regain their respect and esteem.
There is no respect for others without humility in one's self.
Henri Frederic Amiel

Self-respect is the fruit of discipline; the sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself.
Abraham Joshua Heschel
To free us from the expectations of others, to give us back to ourselves - there lies the great, singular power of self-respect.
As all human beings are, in my view, creatures of God's design, we must respect all other human beings. That does not mean I have to agree with their choices or agree with their opinions, but indeed I respect them as human beings.
To be one, to be united is a great thing. But to respect the right to be different is maybe even greater.
I'm sick of just liking people. I wish to God I could meet somebody I could respect.
J. D. Salinger
I have nothing against respecting people who lived before, but we have no responsibility toward them.
If we lose love and self respect for each other, this is how we finally die.

You have to have enough respect for other human beings to leave their lives alone. If you admire that life, build it for yourself. Don't just try to come in and take somebody else's life.
Respect... is appreciation of the separateness of the other person, of the ways in which he or she is unique.
