Journaling Prompts

Chastity: What have your experiences been with the ‘birds and bees’? Was sex a topic that was completely ignored in your youth, or did you get all the info you needed? Did religious beliefs play a role in your relationship to sex, and how does that play out in your life today? Did your first experiences shape your later feelings and choices? How do you feel about the difference between the way boys and girls are treated with regard to intimacy?

Guilty as Charged: Do you feel guilt or remorse about any of your past choices? What did you do, and  did anyone find out about your indiscretion? Have you been accused of something which you were NOT guilty of? How did you defend yourself if you did; if you didn’t stand up for yourself, why not?

Infancy: Do you have photos of yourself as a very new person – hospital photos, or ones taken when you first came home from the hospital? How does it feel to see yourself as an infant? Does the photo resemble you today, or does it seem like a different person? Looking at (or imagining) your infant self, what do you imagine was ahead? What do you think were your parents’ dreams for you, and did you fulfill them? Were you a clean slate or were there expectations already on you? Do you believe that you already had a destiny in you?

Naïveté: Are you a trusting soul or are you more cynical? Have you ever been accused of being naïve or childlike in your view of something? Were or are you embarrassed of your naïveté, or are you comfortable in your innocence?

Oblivious: Are there things you simply don’t notice – things that you’re blind to? What are those things, and why do you think you can’t see them – are they things you’d prefer to not see, or are things that just aren’t in your frame of reference. Are there things you wish were out of view?

Humility: Do you know anyone who is truly humble? Do you possess the trait of humility, or do you seek to be more humble? Are you offended by people who brag about their accomplishments, or does it indicate a healthy sense of self-worth? Is there a place for honest sharing of your accomplishments that isn’t inappropriate?

Know you what it is to be a child? It is to be something very different from the man of to-day. It is to have a spirit yet streaming from the waters of baptism; it is to believe in love, to believe in loveliness, to believe in belief; it is to be so little that the elves can reach to whisper in your ear; it is to turn pumpkins into coaches, and mice into horses, lowness into loftiness, and nothing into everything, for each child has its fairy godmother in its own soul.

Francis Thompson

That's what it takes to be a hero, a little gem of innocence inside you that makes you want to believe that there still exists a right and wrong, that decency will somehow triumph in the end.
